Summer in the Highlands

During the summer, the Hyde Community Center hosts an outdoor summer family concert and movie series on Friday nights, featuring local bands and family-friendly films. A few times throughout the summer, the bandstand is used to stage live theater productions, and story-telling. These free events held in the Hyde Playground on the Hyde Community Center bandstand draw hundreds of local families. For a printable copy of the 2023 schedule that you can download, click here.

Haunted House

Goblins, fairies, pirates and princesses attend the Hyde Community Center Halloween Party and Haunted House.  On the Sunday before Halloween this annual event kicks off with a party for the younger set (up to age 8). Then, the older kids join the younger for a parade around the block. The parade is followed by the Haunted House back at the Hyde gym. Since that event can be scary for the faint of heart it is appropriate only for kids aged 8 and above. The Haunted House consumes half the gym, with party activities in the other half.

Taiwan Day

Newton Taiwan Day is a family-friendly celebration that includes Taiwanese cultural music, dance, and tasty foods. Festivities kick off with a Dragon Dance starting at the Hyde Community Center, continuing down Lincoln St, and then back to the Hyde Center. After the Dragon Dance the fun continues at the Hyde Playground, with dance performances, craft projects for kids, and cultural activities for adults.  There are vendor booths and many giveaways.

Programs

Programs are run in conjunction with other organizations and may have a nominal participation fee.

Zumba Gold with Ketty

A dance inspired workout for the young at heart! A cardio program set to upbeat Latin and international tunes.

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga class is designed to bring the benefits of yoga to a seated practice. There are added options for standing postures as well. We embrace movement and focused breathing to open the mind, body and spirit.

Tai Chi with Aaron

Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a form of low-impact exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing.
