Summer in the Highlands
The Hyde Community Center hosts an outdoor summer family concert and movie series on Friday nights, featuring local bands and family-friendly films. A few times throughout the summer, the Hyde Bandstand is used to stage live theater productions and storytelling. Summer events held at the Hyde Playground and on the Hyde Bandstand draw hundreds of local families. Download and print our Summer 2025 Concert & Movie Series schedule!
Soup Social / WinterFest
Newton Highlands Soup Social, part of Newton Community Pride’s annual WinterFest, is a free community event featuring hot gourmet soups and crusty breads that warm up a cold winter night. Two community groups, the Newton Highlands Neighborhood Area Council and the Hyde Community Center, work together to plan this delectable evening of fresh soups and extras from local restaurants and grocers.
Taiwan Day
Newton Taiwan Day is a family-friendly celebration that includes Taiwanese cultural music, dance, and tasty foods. Festivities kick off with a Dragon Dance starting at the Hyde Community Center, continuing down Lincoln Street, and then returning to the Hyde. The fun continues at the Hyde Playground, with dance performances, craft projects for kids, and cultural activities for adults. There are vendor booths and many giveaways.
Hyde Gym Drop-In Team Sports
Looking for a way to stay active and meet new people? Then bring your friendly competitive spirit to the Hyde Community Center Gym for a drop-in sports game. Adults only. No sign-up required. No cost to participate. All are welcome; Newton residency not required.
Drop-in team sports happen every* Sunday evening at the Hyde Gym, and are run in conjunction with other organizations.
Drop-in Basketball: year-round, 5-7 PM
Drop-in Volleyball: year-round, 8-10 PM
Drop-in Soccer: November to late spring, 7-8 PM
*The Hyde Gym is closed Christmas through New Year’s Day (dates may vary slightly), if the City of Newton declares a snow emergency, and on other rare occasions, at the discretion of the Hyde Executive Director.
