Summer in the Highlands 2019 is finished after fourteen concerts, fourteen movies, two plays and a night of story telling and not one night of rain this summer. Thank you to everyone who attended our summer programs at Hyde Playground. Summer in the Highlands 2020 starts Friday June 12th with Studio Two the Beatles Band.

Two popular drop-in programs at the Hyde Community Center resume this fall:
Zumba Gold with Ketty Rosenfeld, now twice per week!
Tuesdays 10:00-11:00am starts September 17 (No class
November 5)
Fridays 9:45-10:45am starts September 13
Zumba at the Hyde Center
Yoga (chair-based practice including standing sequences)
with Diane Shufro, now three times per week!

Yoga at the Hyde Center
Programs run September-June with a winter break. These
programs are free of charge, though a $3 contribution per class is
suggested. No registration is required, just show up and enjoy!
Finally, a reminder that no programs or rentals will be held
at the Hyde Community Center tomorrow, September 10 because of the Ward 5 City
Councilor preliminary election. Polls are open from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

At 6:15 Friday June 21st Mayor Fuller will be dedicating the new Hyde Playground tot lot that was named to remember Matty Eappen twenty years ago. On Monday June 24th at 4:00 Mayor Fuller will also be at Hyde Playground to thank the Ruderman Family Foundation which donated the money needed to build the walkway to make the play structures accessible.
Friday the 50’s band the Reminisants will be playing at 6:20 followed by the movie at dusk “Ralph Breaks the Internet”.
Sunday Night June 23rd Newton Theater Company will perform “Woman” at 7:00 PM.

Vendors will be allowed to unload until 10am, but cars need to be off
the street to allow for the 5K runners to head towards the finish line.
The day begins with the 5K Road Race at 10:00 AM, followed by the
festival from 11-4. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, all kid
activities are FREE! That includes bounce houses, caricatures, and face

June 7th at 6:00 Studio 2 Beatles Band will be playing at the Hyde Playground Bandstand and at dusk the family movie Mary Poppins (1964) will be shown. Next Friday Mary Poppins Returns (2018) is playing at the Hyde Bandstand.

Support Crystal Lake Conservancy’s efforts to keep Crystal Lake healthy $15 donation per canoe/kayak/paddleboard
Enjoy a lovely canoe, kayak or paddleboard ride on Crystal Lake! The City’s swimming season pass and day pass will be open as usual The Crystal Lake Conservancy and the Newton Parks and Recreation Department invite you to join us for a Sunday afternoon of activities on Crystal Lake. Participants may sign up for half hour slots between 1-4:30pm to enjoy the pleasures of canoeing/kayaking/paddle boarding. A lifeguard will be on duty and all participants will be required to wear life jackets and sign a waiver. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult while on the water. Volunteers are needed to help that day! Learn about the Conservancy’s ongoing watershed activities to protect Crystal Lake!!

Summer in the Highlands 2019 starts Village Day weekend Friday June 7th. We will have thirteen concerts and thirteen movies and Shakespeare play on a Wednesday night this year and Newton Theater Company performance of another play on a Sunday in June.
Major Funding for both the concerts and movies and also for a donation to the Hyde Playground rehab goes to Village Bank a longtime supporter of Summer in the Highlands. Summer in the Highlands is also supported by Newton Community Pride.

Newton Taiwan Day’ Saturday May 4th: Festivities kick off at 11:00 pm with a Dragon Dance starting at the Hyde Community Center, continuing down Lincoln which will be closed to traffic, and then back to the Hyde Center, 90 Lincoln Street, Newton Highlands. After the Dragon Dance the fun continues at the Hyde Playground, where there will be a dance performance, craft projects for kids, and cultural activities for adults. We still need volunteers to help put together the playground equipment. We are planning on completing this in 3 days on April 26th, 27th and 28th (rain or shine) over Newton Serves weekend (this counts as part of Newton Serves!). Friday hours will be 9:00 am to 7:00 pm drop by at any point, there will be two shifts on both Saturday & Sunday 8:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 5:00
This truck delivered all the Hyde Playground equipment!
200 Hundred Yards of mulch was delivered with another 100 yard coming Friday!
